Role Overview

This is a full‑time, remote‑first position based in the United States (California preferred) with a competitive hourly rate of $26 / hour. You will be responsible for the end‑to‑end lifecycle of data pipelines—from ingestion and processing to storage and analytics—while championing best practices in reliability, scalability, and security. You will partner closely with product managers, data scientists, and cross‑functional stakeholders to translate business needs into robust technical solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Development: Recruit, mentor, and grow a diverse team of data engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and high performance.
  • Architecture & Design: Lead the design and implementation of data ingestion frameworks that handle petabytes of telemetry data daily, ensuring low latency, high throughput, and fault tolerance.
  • Pipeline Ownership: Own the reliability, quality, and integrity of data pipelines that feed downstream analytics, machine‑learning models, and reporting tools.
  • Collaboration: Work hand‑in‑hand with product, security, and compliance teams to embed privacy‑by‑design principles throughout the data lifecycle.
  • Performance Optimization: Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including code reviews, automated testing, and performance tuning, to achieve measurable gains in efficiency and cost savings.
  • Incident Management: Establish robust monitoring, alerting, and incident response processes to maintain service level objectives (SLOs) and minimize downtime.
  • Innovation: Evaluate emerging technologies (e.g., streaming platforms, cloud‑native services, AI‑enhanced data processing) and recommend strategic adoption where appropriate.
  • Documentation & Governance: Ensure comprehensive documentation, data lineage tracking, and compliance with internal and external data governance standards.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Minimum 5 years of hands‑on experience designing, building, and operating large‑scale data pipelines and platforms.
  • Proven track record of leading technical teams, setting clear goals, and delivering complex projects on time and within scope.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, data storage concepts, and data processing frameworks.
  • Strong problem‑solving abilities, critical thinking, and the capacity to make data‑driven decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across multiple functional areas.

Preferred Qualifications & Technical Expertise

  • Master’s‑level experience with data engineering tools and systems such as Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS), YARN, Apache Spark, Apache Flink, Kafka, HBase, Impala, or similar technologies.
  • Proficiency in at least two of the following programming languages: Python, Java, Scala, Go, or C++.
  • Hands‑on experience with container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes) and cloud services (AWS, GCP, Azure) for scalable data workloads.
  • Familiarity with data modeling, schema design, and data governance frameworks.
  • Experience implementing privacy‑preserving data pipelines, including anonymization, encryption, and compliance with regulations such as GDPR and CCPA.
  • Prior exposure to machine‑learning pipelines and collaboration with data science teams is a plus.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Technical Leadership: Ability to inspire, coach, and guide engineers toward technical excellence.
  • Strategic Thinking: Visionary mindset that balances short‑term delivery with long‑term architectural sustainability.
  • Collaboration: Strong relational skills to work effectively with product, security, legal, and executive stakeholders.
  • Analytical Acumen: Ability to dissect complex data problems, identify root causes, and propose actionable solutions.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable navigating a fast‑paced environment where priorities shift based on market and user feedback.
