Position Overview

arenaflex is seeking a Distributed Systems Engineer (L4) – Data Platform to join our data infrastructure teams on a part‑time, remote basis. In this role you will help design, develop, and operate the core data pipelines and services that power our recommendation engines, analytics dashboards, and real‑time streaming features. You will collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and fellow engineers to translate business requirements into scalable, reliable, and secure data solutions. This is a unique opportunity to work on a world‑class data platform while enjoying the flexibility of a remote, part‑time schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain highly available data ingestion pipelines that process billions of events per day with sub‑millisecond latency.
  • Develop and evolve the Data Access Layer, enabling microservices to efficiently read, write, and query large‑scale datasets.
  • Collaborate with the Data Platform Foundation team to build reusable tooling, libraries, and APIs that accelerate development across the organization.
  • Engineer robust data processing workflows using technologies such as Kafka, Flink, Spark, and Python‑based orchestration frameworks.
  • Optimize storage and query performance on distributed data stores including Presto/Trino, Druid, and cloud‑native warehouses.
  • Contribute to open‑source projects and internal arenaflex OSS initiatives, sharing knowledge with the broader community.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and incident response drills to uphold high standards of reliability and security.
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and constructive feedback.
  • Drive cross‑functional initiatives, partnering with product, analytics, and operations teams to deliver data‑centric features on schedule.

Essential Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience building large‑scale distributed systems or data platforms.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages: Java, Scala, or Python.
  • Hands‑on experience with RESTful services and microservice architecture patterns.
  • Demonstrated ability to design fault‑tolerant, low‑latency data pipelines using streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka, Pulsar).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Solid understanding of distributed computing concepts such as consensus, replication, and eventual consistency.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with large‑scale data processing frameworks such as Flink, Spark, or Beam.
  • Knowledge of query engines and analytical databases like Presto/Trino, Druid, or Snowflake.
  • Contributions to open‑source projects or involvement in the open‑source community.
  • Exposure to machine learning pipelines and feature engineering workflows.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with a track record of delivering production‑grade solutions under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fully remote, distributed team.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to break down complex business problems into modular, data‑driven solutions.
  • Collaboration: Comfortable partnering with cross‑functional stakeholders, including product, data science, and operations.
  • Adaptability: Thrive in a fast‑changing environment where priorities shift based on user demand and market trends.
  • Ownership: Take end‑to‑end responsibility for the reliability, performance, and scalability of the services you build.
  • Continuous Learning: Commitment to staying current with emerging technologies, best practices, and industry standards.
